Process: Week 2

This week we were able to shoot over two hours of raw footage, allowing us now to enter the very early stages of post-production and editing. We broke the shooting up into three separate dates, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, at three different locations.
On Tuesday, we recorded our first footage of one of the members of our group, Jim, being interviewed about his experience with League of Legends. We had only intended to use the interview as practice for the future, but Jim ended up providing insightful answers that could work well for the documentary. After scoping out a few different places in Heavilon Hall, we determined that the best place to conduct the interviews was in the stairwell, right next to the wall to wall windows. This location had an abundance of daylight, which reflects softly onto the subjects, as opposed to fluorescent light. The stairwell also was completely silent, making it easy for our microphones to pick up the voices of the interviewer and interviewee.
On Thursday, we shot Jim playing League of Legends in his room, to attain game play footage and general LOL related B-roll. Because of the cramped nature of college dorms, it was difficult to achieve certain shots and angles, but we ended up with a variety of different perspectives of Jim playing LOL. We recorder footage of just Jim’s monitor, for pure game play, as well as angles from over his shoulder that felt engaging and made it almost feel as if the audience is playing the game. We also recorded B-roll of Jim using his keyboard and mouse, as well as footage of his face and rapid eye movements as he played the game.
On Sunday, we attended the League of Legends club meeting; to conduct interviews with club members and record more LOL related B-roll. Over the course of a three hour shoot, we interview seven individuals, including the President, Vice-President and Network Manager. We also conducted interviews with four other, non-officer members. Once again, we filmed the interviews next to the windows in Stewart, which provided excellent lighting for each interview. Fortunately, we were also on the third floor of the building, which was entirely silent, allowing our microphones to pick up only the voices of the interview subject. While we were conducting interviews, we had another camera set up inside the room where the club was meeting, recording the clubs interpersonal interactions for over an hour, which will serve as quality b-roll during post production.
